Gillingham head coach Ady Pennock to work with squad he has after confirming playing budget has been used up

No more arrivals are likely at Gillingham this season, according to head coach Ady Pennock.

The transfer window is shut but there is no shortage of free agents desperate for football.

However, with the Gills’ playing budget maxed out, Pennock must complete the season with what he’s got, boosted by the weekend draw at Bradford in League 1.

He said: “It was fantastic on Saturday and the last three games have been phenomenal.

“The previous regime spent the budget, which is a very good one, but there is no money to manoeuvre and there won’t be anyone coming in.

“We have been wheeling and dealing and the Bondz (N'Gala) one was a big blow, a kick in the nether regions, but we have to move on.

“Everyone talks about the finances but the future of the club is more important than anything else.”

A deal for defender N’Gala fell through because he had already played for two clubs this season. It was the second setback for Pennock as he searched for defensive additions.

Speaking after the 2-2 draw at Bradford, he said: “This time last week I had a centre-half lined up. He was going to start a game for his club and then unfortunately he twisted his knee in the warm-up.

“It was all ready for him to sign a contract on Monday but he had an operation on the Tuesday.

“Tuesday (deadline day) came along and I was hunting here, there and everywhere. We had other targets and then the Bondz scenario happened. I just feel sorry for the kid. He is a lovely lad.

“I didn’t know the rules. We phoned up the Football League and even they didn’t know the rules. Bondz would have been great for us. I feel sorry for him. I’m not pointing a finger at anyone, we are where we are.”
