Debutant Callum Reilly gets thumbs up from Gillingham boss Steve Lovell

Gillingham’s new signing Callum Reilly made a big impression on his debut.

The 24-year-old, who has joined on loan from Bury for the remainder of the season, was ‘outstanding’ on Saturday at Scunthorpe according to his new boss.

Steve Lovell said: “He made such a difference, having that balance with a left-sided midfield player, he had a great game, it was a great debut.

“I thought he was outstanding, with just his presence out there and his knowledge of the game, he used his left foot, right foot, played things simple.

“He won the ball for the first goal and played a great ball in, he has been brilliant and gives us that little bit of balance that we were looking for.”

Reilly, a former Republic of Ireland under-21 international, played 25 times for Bury this season before making the switch south.

Lovell said: "I had been tracking him for a while. He's got great energy.

“He is a very good footballer, very intelligent, and what I like is his mobility and fitness. He will fit in with us very nicely."

Reilly, who is just over six foot, started out at Birmingham and made 60 appearances for the Blues in the Championship after making his debut for them in January 2012 in the FA Cup.

He had a spell at Burton Albion on loan before making the move permanent. He joined Coventry on loan a year ago and signed for Bury in the summer, agreeing a two-year deal.
