Gillingham subs Elliott List and Mark Marshall fail to turn the tide at Doncaster

Gillingham’s substitutes didn’t have the desired effect on Saturday.

Boss Steve Evans says he was looking for much more after introducing the pace of both Elliott List and Mark Marshall for the final 30 minutes.

List has often made a great impact previously, while summer signing Marshall is another player with pace and skill. Neither were able to show it for Gillingham at Doncaster.

Evans said: “We have players on the bench that when we introduce them we can cause real problems.

“I said that to the players on the Friday, at the team hotel and then when I named the team.

“When we introduce them with their pace, their trickery and their skill, they have to deliver a lot more.

“They are fresh and they are coming into the game and it’s 100 miles an hour but you’re bringing two players on that can win you games and we had the belief we could do it.”

The Gills were hoping the subs’ influence could swing the match back in their favour after Doncaster had the better of the game in the second half.

Evans added: “We got Marshall one on one with the full-back four times and he doesn’t get by him with any purpose.

“I said to him, ‘you have destroyed some of my teams one on one with full-backs’.

“But in fairness to him, he’s played 60 minutes since last April.

“We tried Elliott just off the striker and it didn’t quite work.

"There was no room there, we brought him wide and we never really got him on the ball one versus one. If we did he destroys them.”
