Gillingham midfielder Josh Wright knows it will be tough to get back in the side

Josh Wright has made the most of the additional time off.

He was one of several Gillingham players who were put through their paces at the end of last week in a bid to reach peak condition.

The 26-year-old midfielder returned from a full week’s training feeling good.

He said: “We had a few days training that were tough but we feel good for it now and it’s fitness in the bank. We did runs that maybe the boys had done in pre-season. It was good, enjoyable and we were together and helped each other through.

“There were a few of us doing some intense stuff but we all felt good and fit. Then we went off for the weekend.”

With no game last weekend, Wright spent a few days at Disneyland in Paris before returning again to prepare for this weekend’s clash against Burton Albion.

He has missed several games recently – three through suspension and another after picking up a virus – but he’s eager to claim his place back in the team.

That won’t be easy though, he admits.

He said: “It is always nice to have that healthy competition. It keeps you on your toes.

“We have some good depth and quality players and all of us have got differences to our game as well, along with similarities.

“What I can offer depends on the formation and role in the team."
