Charity heroes from across the county jumped, climbed, and splashed their way to success at the KM Assault Course Charity Challenge on Sunday (October 8).

The event which boasted a brand new course attracted 20 teams of six and raised £6,000 for 14 good causes including Oasis Domestic Abuse, Porchlight homelessness charity, and Kent Air Ambulance.

Adventurers braved 22 pieces of equipment - and the elements - in their quest to earn sponsor money and were rewarded with a souvenir medal at the finish line. Hosts MY/PT upped the ante this year with a tougher course including rope swing, water jump, tunnels, trenches, and plenty of water and mud to challenge the teams.

The biggest fundraising group generated £1,185 for Hypo Hounds, a Kent based charity that trains diabetic alert dogs, and the Best Fancy Dress accolade went Reckless Abandonment who donned skeleton outfits to raise funds for Fresh Visions, a cause for disadvantaged children and young adults.

A hit with all ages, the event attracted participants including 12 year-old Daniel Woolcombe who took part in aid of Victim Support, and 69-year old Gordon Henderson MP for Sittingbourne and Sheppey who championed the Litter Angels eco charity which he founded in 2008.

Fastest to the finish line was the Trinity Fencing Community Interest Company who completed the course in less than 13 minutes. Go Hard for Golding Homes housing association were hot on their heels with a time of 13 minutes 21 seconds, and a team supporting North Kent Disabled Foundation finished 21 seconds later to clinch third place.

Organised by the KM Charity Team and staged at Betteshanger Country Park, near Deal, the event will boost the coffers of good causes including Deal Breastfeeding Group, Seashells Children’s Centre, St Ethelbert’s PTFA, Royal Marsden Cancer Charity, and RSPCA Canterbury and District.

Event organiser Dominic Comins said: “I take my hat off to our intrepid teams who took on the exciting new course with bucket loads of enthusiasm to support such fantastic causes. It was a brilliant and incredibly mucky day out for all involved and I’m already looking forward to next year!”
