The Green School Awards recognised schemes in the county’s schools that promote green travel to school, recycling and sustainability, nature conservation and energy conservation.

Simon Dolby, chief executive of the KM Charity Team, said: ” Our judges were delighted by the range of green activities taking place in our schools, and had the tough task of selecting the district winners and overall champions. We have seen some great environmental initiatives that are inspiring and empowering pupils to strive for a better future for their communities. One of the day’s big winners was Senacre Wood Primary School, Maidstone which claimed the Overall Green Champion honour.”

Winning schools demonstrated best practice in educating students about the environment and encouraging them to adopt eco-friendly initiatives. Pupils, teachers and parents from infant, primary and secondary schools were invited to the award presentation event staged at Canterbury Cricket Club.

Hampton Primary School, Canterbury was named Overall Eco School Champion, whilst Sandwhich Technology School, Dover became the Overall Nature Conservation Champion and Thames View Primary School, Medway picked up the Walk To School champion title.

A detailed overview of all the winning schemes will be published in a best practice booklet circulated to participating schools across the region and available to download here
