Arctic winds will bring freezing weather to many areas this week with sub-zero temperatures forecast by the Met Office.

A northerly airflow, say meteorologists, will bring significantly colder air to the UK from Sunday as the Arctic airmass ‘exerts its influence’.

A chance of ‘disruptive snow’ is also possible for some central and southern areas around the middle of the week, suggest forecasters, who admit there is ‘still plenty of detail to work out’.

Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist Chris Bulmer explained: “There are a couple of weather systems for Tuesday and Wednesday which we are keeping an eye on that bring the potential for disruptive snow for some regions.

“With cold air firmly in place, any weather systems that move across the country next week will bringing mainly snowfall inland. Models are currently showing us a variety of options for both systems and we’ll be able to add more details to in the coming days.”

The UK Health Security Agency has a Cold Health Alert in force, which highlights the problems freezing weather can cause the health and social care sector in looking after the most vulnerable.

Dr Agostinho Sousa, Head of Extreme Events and Health Protection is asking people to check in on friends and neighbours as temperatures drop.

He added: “The temperatures we will see leading into the weekend can rapidly have a serious impact on the health of those over the age of 65 and those with pre-existing health conditions as it increases the risk of heart attacks, strokes and chest infections.

“It is therefore vital to check in on friends, family and neighbours to ensure they are well prepared for the cold weather next week.”

The RAC too has added its voice to the warnings – asking drivers to make sure they’re prepared for the potential for ice and snow.

Spokesperson Simon Williams said: “Having a few essential items in the boot – no matter what distance you’re going – can make a massive difference in a breakdown situation in freezing conditions. A warm, waterproof coat, sturdy footwear and gloves, along with a blanket and a power bank to keep your phone charged are vital.

“While no one sets out to breakdown or get stuck in very cold, potentially snowy conditions, there are far too many instances where drivers have underestimated the severity of the conditions and found themselves in danger.”
