Images of the vehicle were posted on the Hythe Residents Group on Facebook, sparking debate on what it could be.

Daniel Knapp said: "I saw this near Dungeness. I had that moment of 'what the hell is that' as it came towards me!"

Some speculated that it could be a "delivery robot", adding: "They have them in Milton Keynes too."

Will Coleman said: "It must have an engine as it was going quick towards me."

Others were glad to see that they weren't the only ones to have spotted it.

Susanna Godden said: ""I am so happy to see this!! Totally wasn't making it up!! Literally the hardest thing to try and explain."

Another person joked: "Top Gear are filming down there at the moment".

While another user quipped: "Desperate times with all these train strikes."

But Robert Bailey appeared to have the answer to the mystery.

"It’s a covered recumbent trike," he wrote.

"Velomobile is a popular brand. Incidentally to all those that said robot / delivery bot, they don’t have rear view mirrors!"

According to velomobileworld.com, the "human-powered" vehicles can achieve speeds of up to 30mph "with little effort" on flat roads.

The website adds: "Velomobiles are very suitable as commuter vehicles, for shopping or holidays, [and] also are a good way to clear your mind while taking a tour or a road trip with your friends."
