Sandwich Technology School will get rid of five members of staff in cost cutting measures

Five members of staff are being made redundant at Sandwich Technology School, documents leaked to the Mercury have revealed.

The documents outline the cuts and how much the school would save as a result of axing jobs.

Teachers are said not to be at risk of redundancy but part of the restructuring does mean that 12 teachers who formerly had additional roles will now have these taken away – which will eventually mean a pay cut.

If those members of staff have not been offered one of the new head of subject roles, they will receive three years pay protection and a temporary job.

“I wouldn’t be doing this if I thought it was going to have a negative impact" - Tracey Savage, head teacher

Tracey Savage, head teacher at Sandwich Technology School, said: “I know this is people’s lives and I have a conscience about that. I haven’t done this lightly. The governing body and I have tried really hard to be open about this.

“I genuinely believe in the end the school will be in a stronger position.” Four members of staff have also resigned but the school says this is unrelated. However, their roles will not be replaced.

Mrs Savage said the changes will ensure the school remains financially stable as nationally schools are struggling with reductions to their budget.

She said: “At the moment Sandwich Technology School is financially sound but we have to set a three year budget. If year on year reductions continue that financial stability will not continue and this is why the restructuring is happening to make sure we’re safeguarding for the future.”
She said it will also improve standards in the school.
“I wouldn’t be doing this if I thought it was going to have a negative impact on the school. I anticipate some really positive impact from this.”
