Ightham Mote near Sevenoaks closed after floods batter Kent

A historic medieval manor house has been closed to the public after it was hit by flash floods during the weekend.

Ightham Mote and the nearby town of the same name were among several areas that became waterlogged when heavy rains caused disruption in several areas around Sevenoaks.

The 14th-century house will remain closed until later this week while conservation experts from the National Trust clean out the ground floor. The shop, cafe and gardens will remain open as normal.

Bernadette Gillow, general manager at Ightham Mote said: "Following Saturday night’s flash flooding, we are pleased to be able to re-open the gardens today. The house will remain temporarily closed whilst the conservation team clean up, and we shall reassess plans to re-open later this week."

On Saturday 17 homes were evacuated from Borough Green Road and Bushy Lane in Ightham. Water reached 7ft when a brook burst its banks.

Fire crews also rescued two people from a car in Watery Lane, Kemsing, after the vehicle became submerged up to the windows in flood water and an ambulance was called for a man suffering from being in the cold water.

The flood waters have now receded.
