Boys' grammar school planned for Sevenoaks, Kent County Council reveals

A boys' grammar school is planned for the same building as one currently being constructed for girls.

Construction work has already begun on an annex that will be the first new grammar school to be built in England in 50 years at the Weald of Kent Girls Grammar School in Sevenoaks.

Now it has been revealed that Kent County Council will open a boys' grammar on the same site if Theresa May gives the green light.

The Sunday Times revealed the plans for the boys' school this morning. Kent County Council leader Paul Carter told the paper: "We will be asking Theresa May for permission to open this new boys' grammar in Sevenoaks."

He said if the plans were blocked there was a contingency to relocate an adult education centre to the new block.

"We want a three-form entry school for boys as well as girls," he added. "We are concerned that in parts of West Kent there are no grammar school facilities for boys.

Education secretary Nicky Morgan last year gave the green light for the annex to be built at Sevenoaks, sponsored by the Weald of Kent Girls Grammar School.

A tree was planted to mark the start of the build, in Sevenoaks, and KCC leader Paul Carter was among the first to lay soil at the official topping out ceremony.

The issue has been hugely divisive, with up to 30 Tory MPs expected to vote against legislation allowing new grammars to open.
