Sevenoaks Council set to tell residents about the radical change to the way they will have to register for elections

Over the summer residents will experience the biggest change in the last century to the way they will have to register for elections.

A new system aims to replace the Victorian structure currently in place where the head of household is required to register everyone living in a property.

Under the new scheme, every individual will be responsible for registering themselves.

The Electoral Commission will be advertising the change in registration to make local residents more aware and prepared.

Samantha Mills, head of campaigns at the Electoral Commission, added: "We welcome this change, which will lead to a more secure register."

Sevenoaks District Council will be sending a letter to every eligible resident telling them the details of the new system.

Although many people will automatically move onto the new register, some will need to take action to join or remain on it. This can now be done quickly and easily by registering online.

Ian Bigwood, the Council's electoral services manager, said: "Residents will receive a letter from 30 July that will explain the changes to the electoral registration system.

"Look out for the letter as it will tell you if you have been automatically transferred to the new register or not.

"If you have not been transferred, you will need to provide some additional information and the letter will tell you exactly what you need to do."
