Young people will be able to sit in comfort and safety while they try fishing thanks to an Island charity.

Holm Place Anglers used a £1,000 grant from the Dannyboy Trust to buy four seat boxes.

The padded chairs have six legs for stability and they can also be used to store items like bait and tackle while rails on the front and back can be used to support rods.

The new equipment was tested out by nine children with special needs from Meadowfield School, Sittingbourne.

Each of them managed to catch between 10 and 20 small fish.

Neil Ballard, chairman of Holm Place Anglers, said: “We have been going for 30 years. We are a community-based fishing club and we are trying to get them to try fishing rather than sit inside on the computer.

“Most of the kids get a lot out of it. They might start off and won’t touch the bait or anything but by the end they’re holding the fish. It really does help build their confidence.”

He thanked Dannyboy Trust for its donation.

More sessions are planned with children from other schools for later in the year.
