The Environment Agency had returned to the site off Marine Parade, Sheerness, after more dead fish were found and it started producing a horrible stench.

Islanders could smell the whiff right back to the canal at Halfway Road and Swale council had issued warnings not to use the water until the source of the problem was revealed.

The test results, which came back yesterday (Tuesday) are all clear with no indication there is anything harmful to health in the water.

To try and combat the pong, the sluice boards at the Barton's Point end of Queenborough Lines have been opened in order to try and get a greater exchange of sea water.

This is because the issue is thought to relate to the low levels of oxygen in the water, following a dry spell of weather and sunny conditions.
