A charity concert will give a special dedication to an Islander who died from a heart attack while driving last year.

Terry Long, who was known for his work in bands on the Island and as a fundraiser for the Salvation Army, passed away aged 73 in November.

Chatham Salvation Army will be performing at Hope Street Church, Hope Street, Sheerness, on Saturday, February 16, from 7.30pm.

The brass band, which originally formed in 1881, will play a piece of music in memory of Mr Long, who taught inmates at HMP Standford Hill how to use instruments.

Widow Olive Long, who is herself a member of the Sheerness Salvation Army, said: “Terry and I arranged this before died, back in the summer.

“We have got quite a nice link with the Chatham band. Over the years, they have given us quite a lot of support.”

Money raised will go towards Salvation Army work in Sheerness and the charity’s annual appeal nationwide.

  • Tickets, which cost £5 each, are available from Rose Street Heritage Centre, Rose Street, Sheerness, Hope Street Church, from Olive Long on 01795 877492, or at the door.
