Alan Smith of Harps Avenue in Minster jailed after drugs found hidden in his shed and attic

A man has been jailed for four years after police discovered cannabis plants in a secret compartment in his shed.

Alan Smith, of Harps Avenue, Minster initially said he had nothing to hide when police visited his home in October 2015.

But an officer noticed the inside of the shed, where he said he stored tools, appeared smaller than the outside.

A door concealed with planks of wood was found to lead to a another section where 25 cannabis plants were hidden.

The 56-year-old admitted he had more plants in his attic and police found another 89, along with a bathtub full of harvested leaves.

Appearing at Maidstone Crown Court last month, Smith, who admitted producing a Class B drug, was sentenced to four years in prison.

Investigating officer Detective Constable Karen Wigley said: "Smith had an established set-up which showed a clear intention to grow cannabis.

"Operations like this are a blight which often have a wide-ranging impact on the local community by encouraging other types of crime.

"His sentence is a clear message. If you’re involved in the supply of drugs you will be caught and dealt with accordingly."
