Oasis Academy, Sheppey, cancels Belgium trip over terror fears

Oasis Academy has cancelled a trip for pupils to Belgium in the wake of Friday’s terror attacks in Paris.

Tomorrow, 44 youngsters and a handful of staff members had planned on going to see the Flanders battlefields.

This is the second time the First World War history trip has been cancelled after it was initially postponed in the summer due to Operation Stack on the M20 motorway.

But on Monday, school officials made the decision to rearrange the trip once more following the bombings and shootings, which left 132 people dead.

French investigators have since revealed at least two of the terrorists were from Belgium.

An Oasis spokesman said: “In light of the horrific events and in response to parental feedback and concerns, we made the decision to defer the trip to Ypres.

“We have liaised with the tour operator, Galloway Travel, which has taken a number of calls from other schools with trips scheduled over the next few days.

“The tour company fully understands parental concerns and is more than happy to defer at no financial penalty.”
