Isle of Sheppey Superbike champion Shane ‘Shakey’ Byrne returns home following crash

A Kent superbike champion who suffered spinal injuries during a crash on Thursday, May 17, in Norfolk, has returned home.

Shane “Shakey” Byrne, from the Isle of Sheppey, crashed during a testing session as teams prepared for the Bennetts Superbike Championship.

He was taken to the intensive care unit at Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital following the crash at Snetterton after briefly losing consciousness.

Mr Byrne was treated for spinal fractures and social media posts showed him returning home yesterday in a brace while travelling in a helicopter.

His neck and back brace has been fitted with four bolts drilled into his skull to ensure maximum stability during recovery.
