The Sweet Hut has been opened at Sheppey's Minster Leas by Swale mayor George Bobbin

A shop selling traditional seaside treats has opened on Minster Leas.

The Sweet Hut had its official launch on Sunday on the site of the old lifeguard building opposite the Playa.

Mayor of Swale, Cllr George Bobbin, did the honours on behalf of the shops owners, Paul and Nina Weeks.

The Sittingbourne couple have a variety of goodies on offer including toffee apples, candy floss, homemade fudge and 60 jars of vintage-style sweets.

They will open from 11am to 4pm, Thursday to Sunday during winter and seven days a week thereafter.

The hut provides the Weeks with their first permanent trading post having previously sold their traditional wares from a 1970s van.

Paul said: “The opening day went really well and all the local people seemed really pleased something was being done with the lifeguard building.

“If Sunday’s experience is anything to go by, business should be brisk in the coming months.

“This bit of beach is lovely - a best kept secret.”
