Youngsters help shape skate park

Sheerness Enhancement Association for Leisure (SEAL) Brian Spoor, secretary, and chairman Bernie Watson have unveiled plans for a skatepark

Young people are being offered the chance to have their say on plans for a new skate park.

The proposal to revamp the Beachfields area of the town and improve existing facilities was announced last year by the Sheerness Enhancement Association for Leisure (SEAL).

Now a public consultation is being organised for youngsters to look at displays of different designs and say what they think should be included.

SEAL treasurer Chris Foulds said the group is turning its attention back to the project after being “sidetracked” with other work, including the repainting of the Clock Tower.

He said: “The reason for doing this is to get the views of all the youngsters to see what is their favourite.

“It is their decision more than anything. After this we have got a petition with quite a number of signatures which will be taken to Swale Borough Council.”

He said it was important that the final design is what the potential users would actually want so members of SEAL will be at the consultation meeting to get people’s feedback.

Drawings have been made up by companies Maverick, Wheelscape and Bendcrete Skateparks and projected costs range from £150,000 to £200,000.

Drawings have also been made by young people who use the current park off Beach Street.

SEAL will balance local preferences with advice from the design companies and a final decision on the look will be made later this year so it can start bidding for money.

It is hoped the park will open in summer 2013, which Mr Foulds said has always been the target.

The meeting will take place at Sheerness County Youth Club, Broadway, Sheerness, on Thursday, October 18, from 7pm until 8pm.
