A 25-20 win over Brockleians on Saturday brought to an end their incredible Kent 1 season, where they finished unbeaten, scoring 907 match points along the way and topping the table with 104 points.

“We definitely wanted to win the league but we didn’t foresee just how we were going to do it,” said the coach, who already has his eye on next season.

“Next year the aim is for a top five finish. We’ve put our marker down early and these targets are something the lads thrive off.

“The boys love a challenge and it is a big challenge next season but it’s more than achievable.”

Sheppey were promoted with four games of the season remaining and among those teams to have been beaten since then were second placed Old Williamsonians and third placed Beccehamian.

Anchorians had the previous points record with 97 and Sheppey also smashed the previous best points total of 800.

Dengate said: “The whole squad and the coaches and everyone at the club are immensely proud of what we have achieved. It has been a phenomenal season and will live long in the memory.

“The players take all the credit. They did the hard work and produced week in, week out and to be that consistent over 22 games when everyone is trying to knock us off our perch is testament to the commitment and the character of the team.”
