Sheppey United interim manager Ross Wiles is ready to hand over responsibility of first team affairs as interviews take place at the Isthmian South East club

Sheppey interim manager Ross Wiles believes whoever takes over on a permanent basis is getting a club that’s in great shape.

Wiles has enjoyed a super time in temporary charge of the Ites following Jack Midson’s unexpected departure but knows his spell at the helm could be ending soon.

“Whatever is a good move for the club I am happy with,” said the caretaker, speaking after a third successive 4-0 win, as Sheppey eased past a young Gillingham team on Friday night.

“The club has been good to me and it’s not just me here, it is the coaches as well who have helped.

“It’s been fantastic for them to come in, making it as professional as we can with what we’ve been given.

“[The new management] is going to get a very good side, a very settled side who seem to be really enjoying their football and it has gone up levels.

“Whoever comes in is walking into a very good job, not only the team, but fantastic facilities and the fantastic support. Nothing is without the fans, football without the fans is not worth being here. They came in their numbers on Friday night and it was brilliant to be part of that, really good, it’s where you want to spend your Friday nights!

“Look at the support we had. Friday night football at Holm Park, everyone was out, school holidays, it is a brilliant place to be. I was absolutely buzzing.”

Sheppey played away against Snodland Town on Tuesday night, winning 5-1, with goals from Dan Bradshaw (2), Eddie Allsopp, Connor Wilkins and Frankie Morgan.

The club were accepting applications for the manager’s role up until Friday with interviews taking place this week. Wiles admits he’s unlikely to be in the frame - even if he hasn’t ruled it out completely.

“I’ve just taken it day by day,” he said. “Friday was a good day, whatever the future may bring, I am letting the powers that be get on with that.

“I have different things going on. My father isn’t too well. It changes daily. One minute I really want a crack at it, it is a great place to be, but life is really hectic away from football, so it is just the timing of it. I won’t say yes, but I certainly won’t say no.”

Wiles has certainly enjoyed the ride, with big wins in his first three pre-season games in charge.

He said: “It has been a real eye-opener, a really good experience, being in and around the game for a long time and managing the last 10 years, to finally do this.

“I had the under-23s for around 18 months, a highly successful side. Some of those young lads got on (on Friday) with one of them scoring at the end.

“It has been pleasing, I am lucky to have brought in some staff and I am only as good as the people I bring in as well.

“It has been good and I have enjoyed it.”

*Sheppey, meanwhile, have signed up seven youngsters to the first team, six of which were part of Wiles’ successful under-23 and under-18 title-winning sides.

The seven are goalkeepers Hadley Glock and Alfie Irvine, midfielders Bailey Catherick, Aiden Clark and forwards Kenzie Monahan, Jack Marsh and Oladipo Durowoju.
