A2 London Road water leak in Newington delaying traffic by Playstool Road junction

There are delays on part of the A2 due to a water leak that looks like a “stream”.

Southern Water has installed temporary traffic lights along London Road, in Newington, by the Playstool Road junction while the company deals with the problem.

Motorists who were stuck in queues as a result of the burst pipe said repairs were being made at 7.30pm last night (January 18).

One woman said: “When I drove past at around 3pm yesterday and then again in the evening there was water running down the A2 like a stream.

“My main concern was about the temperature dropping and it becoming icy.

“There was so much water splashing up from cars that icicles had formed on the bushes on one side of the road."

Cllr Richard Palmer, who lives near Newington High Street, explained there was slow traffic throughout the village as a result of the leak.

He said: “Poor parking is adding to the problem but there is slow traffic because of the temporary traffic lights.”

Cllr Palmer also witnessed a police vehicle with its blue lights on unable to pass traffic due to the congestion.

Southern Water has been contacted for information.

One.Network suggests the temporary traffic lights will be in place until Wednesday, January 24.
