It comes after a woman was taken to hospital after apparently trying to avoid the damage.

Police were called after her car crashed into the central reservation between the Bobbing roundabout and Key Street roundabout shortly before 9am.

A spokesman for Highways England has said lane two will remain open until 9.30am tomorrow, when it will be closed for the rest of the day to allow for essential repairs.

It has since emerged Issy Anderson had tried to avoid a pothole, believed to be over 100ft long, while travelling to Medway Maritime Hospital for a routine appointment.

Her father, Hugh Fitzgibbon, told KentOnline: "The ambulance finally picked her up three and a quarter hours after.

"We went down to see her when we found and and she was on her own while the police had the road cordoned off.

"The police were fantastic, I can't complain about them at all."

She was driving a black Ford Kia which was written off.
