New Wimpy and Maplin stores set to boost Sittingbourne job market

A fast-food favourite and an electronics store look set to boost the town’s job market.

Wimpy has confirmed its intention to return to Sittingbourne after closing its previous branch in February 2011.

It was in the High Street for more than 20 years and was replaced by coffee shop Haswells.

In a move that would create 12 jobs, the company plans to open in the unit next to Argos, formerly Ponden Home, which closed earlier this year.

Samantha Howe, brand manager for Wimpy, said: “Because of its success, we are hoping to bring Wimpy back to Sittingbourne with a new franchise owner in September, which will subsequently create a number of jobs.

“As a proudly British brand, we are continually looking for new franchisees and already have plans to open a further six new restaurants nationwide over the next 12 months.”

The application is for the change of use from retail to a restaurant.

An internal refurbishment is planned and booth seating is proposed.

A statement by Bobbing-based architect Kent Design Partnership backing the plans says: “The west of the High Street currently has a low number of restaurant eating areas.

“Wimpy believes there is a need for a restaurant within this area of the main High Street. It will provide the shoppers with a much-needed space to meet and eat whilst shopping within the High Street.

“The proposal to convert the ground floor to a Wimpy will allow this part of the High Street to remain alive and prosperous.”

Meanwhile Maplin is to open a branch at Sittingbourne Retail Park, in Mill Way, with 15 full and part-time positions.

The shop will feature a consultation service area, gaming area and play tables. Representatives from Google, Wacom, Panasonic and Double Jump Gaming Centre in Sheerness are due at the opening on Saturday, June 10.
