The accident has led to six-mile traffic queues in the area, where one lane was closed between J5 for the A249 at Stockbury Roundabout and J6 for the A251 Ashford Road.

The road has now reopened and delays are expected to begin clearing.

Hours later, one of two lanes was blocked on the same stretch of road at around 9.20am.

An ambulance service spokesman confirmed crews were sent to the scene and a patient was taken to Medway Maritime Hospital in Gillingham for further treatment.

A police spokesman added: “Kent Police was called at 6.10am on to a report of a collision involving a car on the M2 coastbound between junctions 5 and 6.

“Officers attended to assist with clearing the road and recovering the vehicle.

“Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS) and South East Coast Ambulance Service (SECAmb) also attended and a person has been taken to a local hospital after injuries were reported.”

A spokesman for KFRS said: “Three fire engines attended, and on arrival crews helped the person get out of the vehicle safely before passing them into the care of SECAmb paramedics for precautionary checks.”
