Lightning McQueen inspired-car spotted outside Greggs in Sittingbourne

A Disney favourite has been spotted on the streets popping through the town’s Greggs drive-thru.

One of the county’s motorists took inspiration from Cars star Lightning McQueen and took people by surprise when out and about this morning.

It was snapped in Sittingbourne getting its tanks filled up at Asda in Bobbing.

The vehicle, a Ford Mustang, is owned by Simon Day – a wheel technician at British Car Auctions who lives in Kemsley with his wife Debbie.

The father-of-five explained: "It all started when I got my Ford Mustang in May 2020.

"An opportunity came up so I bought and upgraded it before I did any of Lightning's work.

"It was already a childhood dream to own a Mustang as it is one of my all-time favourite cars anyway.

"I then thought what can I do with it at about the same time I saw one similar in America, and then I decided - I want to do that.

"Cars is such a great film especially given it's animated.

"My wife actually told me I would ruin the car by doing this as it won't suit it, so I was hesitating for a little while before I decided to go ahead with it."

The Mustang has been painted in the replica red and yellow colours of the hit Disney supercar, with McQueen's number 95 also embedded on its side.

Cars was released back in 2006 and features the main character Lightning - a young and confident racecar voiced by Owen Wilson – who becomes lost in the rural town of Radiator Springs on U.S. Route 66 while on his way to win motorsport's biggest prize, The Piston Cup.

Its release proved a big hit with many, including Simon, who decided to purchase the classic car three years ago before getting it painted shortly afterwards.

Simon says he then began the transformation 18 months ago before its completion in October.

The 58-year-old, who has lived in Sittingbourne for 14 years, says he has only taking it out on the road about a dozen times since.

He added: "I have used it for shows at circuits like Silverstone and Brands Hatch, but I'm not racing it though in fear of crashing.

"Prestige Graphics in Sittingbourne painted it for me and they've made it look really good, so it's definitely my pride and joy.

"As far as I'm aware, it's also the only one of its kind in England.

"My kids love it as well, and I've also done a couple of children's birthday parties which have made them happy so it's been a really enjoyable journey.

"I may be 58, but I'm definitely a big kid at heart."
