Bathroom flytipped in Canterbury Lane, Upchurch

Is Upchurch going down the pan?

Canterbury Lane has been targeted by fly-tippers, who dumped what looks like an entire bathroom there - including everything but the sink!

The structure still has tiling on one wall, complete with water heater, plug sockets and toilet.

It comes after decking was left in the same road earlier this week.

This "shocking" fly-tipping has been condemned by Upchurch Cllr John Wright, who said: "It seems to be an increasing problem around the area.

"This is a hideous and very insensitive crime that causes a lot of pain for the rate payer.

"It’s something that needs to be stopped.

"We need to educate people to do the right thing and check that whoever comes to collect rubbish from them has a licence as if the waste is flytipped and evidence is found of whose waste it is, they will receive a hefty fine."

A Medway Council spokesman said: “We are working with contractors to get the waste cleared as quickly as possible.

"The three fly-tips are substantial in size and therefore we need specialists to remove it in stages. The first load will be removed today, and the remainder over the coming days.

“All fly-tipping causes damage to the environment and costs the council thousands of pounds each year to clear.

"However, this particular fly-tip, due to its hazardous and large contents, will be especially expensive and time consuming to tidy up.

“The council has a zero tolerance approach to fly-tipping, it’s unacceptable, and anyone found to be dumping waste in Medway will be prosecuted.”
