Sittingbourne rail delays caused by fare dodger

A man who hadn't paid his train fare "panicked" when he saw ticket collectors at Sittingbourne station.

And instead of coughing up for a ticket, the 19-year-old tried to run away onto the tracks to escape a fine after "thinking they were there for him", according to a British Transport Police spokesman.

Officers were called at around 1.40pm this afternoon when the man was spotted on the tracks.

A spokesman confirmed he did receive a fine, which is usually a £20 fixed penalty or twice the full single fare to the next station.

Minor delays were caused by the incident but were cleared by 1.50pm.
