I’m ready, where’s the bowler?

Supporters of Newington Cricket Club may have noticed a change in the appearance of its live mascot.

For the last four years a Rouen breed of duck has been the public face of the team appearing in magazines and making appearances on TV programmes such as Sky Sport 1’s Cricket AM.

The animal was chosen because the club’s crest features three ducks.

Sadly the original creature, which the team adopted via Kent Life at Sandling near Maidstone, died at the end of July at the grand old age of six.

Stepping in to his shoes is an Indian runner duck which has also been supplied by the open air museum. His first outing was to the club’s ninth annual cricket week which was held from July 29 to August 2.

During his visit he met committee member David Creasy, who came up with the idea of having a feathered friend as a mascot, and sponsorship co-ordinator Andrew Morgan, both pictured.

From Monday to Thursday, Newington played teams from Rainham, Lenham, Streatham and Marlborough and Ryde. Friday was the inter-clubs’ under 30s versus over 30s match.

There was also a curry night and a hog roast.

The event raised around £600 for the club.
