Sittingbourne memories group appeals for volunteers

Volunteers are needed to help with an ambitious plan to record people’s memories of the town.

The Memories of Sittingbourne group, set up by former editor of the East Kent Gazette Christine Rayner, is looking for people willing to share their memories of any aspect of life in the 20th or 21st centuries.

It is also appealing for people to be trained to conduct interviews.

Mrs Rayner said: “I wrote a memories page for the Gazette for 21 years and I know how proud people are of Sittingbourne’s long and important history, particularly its social history.

“This project is a continuation of the regular newspaper feature. My idea is to record people talking about specific memories of life in the town and to set up an oral archive, which can be used by schools, family researchers and historians of the future.”
