Peter Webb, of Sittingbourne, amazed no one killed when hit and run driver crashed into car and wall

A pensioner says it is lucky nobody was killed after a car smashed into his garden wall and wrecked a neighbour's Ford Focus.

Peter Webb, of Key Street, Sittingbourne, was having dinner with his wife Lorna when Aaron Green, who lives next door, came round to ask whether they had seen anything.

A Renault Clio, which had been driven off, ploughed into the Ford and the wall outside the couple's home.

Mr Webb, a former RAF navigator, says the damage could total £2,500.

The 81-year-old said: "We have double glazed windows and were in the back of the house so didn’t hear a thing.

"When I saw the damage I was surprised nobody was killed.

"My wall looked like it had been hit by a truck, the hole was that big. They must have been doing some speed as they have also fractured the axle of the neighbour's car."

Police revealed the Renault had been reported stolen from Sandford Road, just half a mile from Mr Webb's home.

But despite a registration plate from the hit and run vehicle being found at the scene, the person responsible has yet to be traced.

"The lack of urgency to investigate this by the police surprises me, I have yet to see someone and have only dealt with them over the phone," said Mr Webb.

"All I wanted was for someone to come out, write down what had happened and give me some reassurance.

"Here we are three weeks later and you'd think they'd have more information?

"They don't seem to pursue these things and all I've gotten was a call from the inspector telling me they couldn't complete the investigation."

A police spokesman said: "There are no outstanding lines of inquiry so details of both the collision and the reported theft have now been filed pending any further information coming to light."

The couple are thankful their home insurance has covered the cost of the damage, but it is expected to be three months before the wall can be rebuilt.

Mrs Webb said the incident left her shaken and frightened.

"I was hoping the car would have got stuck after the crash and then he wouldn't have gotten away," she said.

"The whole experience makes you wonder if you can even leave your own home."
