Sittingbourne market could be heading to the High Street as part of regeneration plans.

The proposal, unveiled at the local engagement forum, is for a two-day operation on Fridays and Saturdays from next year.

It will mean moving it from its current location at the Forum car park.

The new site will start outside Wilkinson and depending on popularity, could stretch as far as the entrance to Central Avenue.

The High Street would close to traffic between 6am and 6pm on both days.

Speaking at Monday night’s meeting, Lyn Newton, Swale council’s economy and community services manager, said the proposed site was one of seven considered for a new outdoor trading spot.

She said: “We’re serious about trying to breathe life into the market.

“We want to find a new location and we’re about to embark on an intensive period of consultation.”

Miss Newton said the market could take on a number of different themes from week-to-week.

She also said community groups could use the site as a staging post for shows and exhibitions.

“It has the potential to grow and we want to be able to
provide a blank canvas for the development of events in the community,” she said.

Miss Newton said traders had already been asked for their views, with the consultation process likely to continue until December when an official statement on the move is likely to be made.

If approved, she said she hoped the first High Street market will take place in the spring.

Swale Joint Transportation Board meets on Monday, when the proposed road closures will be first discussed.

Speaking of the negotiations that will need to progress with parties including retailers, bus companies and taxi firms as well as the public, Miss Newton said: “I know it’s not going to be without its challenges.

“But sometimes when you’re in the High Street, it seems to lack spirit.

“What we’ve got to do is try to create the opportunity to bring it to life.”
