A249: Sittingbourne and Sheerness hit by flash floods

Flash floods and thunderstorms wreaked havoc with Sittingbourne and Sheerness’s major transport routes this week when carriageways and rail lines became submerged under water.

The bank holiday weekend saw long periods of thunder and lightning before sunny spells on Monday gave the weather a more positive outlook.

However, Tuesday’s torrential rain caused chaos on the A249 at Stockbury and Kemsley as well as the M2 from Faversham to Chatham.

Homes in Sittingbourne were also flooded when the downpour began at around 10am. The A2 between Sittingbourne and Newington was also affected by huge amounts of standing water on the carriageway.
