Sittingbourne: Shed set ablaze after lightning strike in Orchard Place

Lightning strikes sparked two fires in Sittingbourne as thunderstorms and rain lashed the county today.

A shed in Orchard Place was hit just after 11.30am and witnesses saw smoke coming from the roof of the building.

Crews from Sittingbourne and from Faversham attended the scene and found the lightning had struck metal scaffolding and ladders being stored on the roof of the building, creating a small hole.

They removed an interior ceiling and used a hose reel jet to put out a small fire in the roof void. After damping down the area they left the scene around noon.

Around the same time crews were called to College Road where a detached garage had also be hit.

The fire was extinguished by just after 1pm and no one is believed to have been injured in either incident.
