A teenager suffered head and ankle injuries after being hit by a car.

The 15-year-old, who attends Sittingbourne Community College, was walking to school when the accident happened near the town’s Commonwealth Close.

Police and medical staff in two ambulances and a car were sent to the scene just before 8.30am today.

The road was closed at 8.52am to allow the emergency services to treat him, and reopened at 9.10am.

He was taken to Medway Maritime Hospital in Gillingham, but the extent of his injuries was unknown.

Head teacher Fiona Trigwell said: “A SCC student was involved in a road traffic accident on this morning on their way to school.

“We had three staff in attendance even though the accident was some distance from the school.

“There was extremely calm behaviour. A special thank you goes to another student of ours, Courtney McGinn, who, despite being shocked, called the ambulance and the student’s mother and remained calm and supportive until the medics arrived.

“All of our students behaved in an exemplary manner and were a credit to the college.

“As part of our ongoing work in assemblies and tutor times about students keeping themselves safe we will be continuing to remind them about road safety.”
