St George's Day celebrations to take place in Sittingbourne High Street tomorrow

The finishing touches are being put to this weekend’s St George’s Day celebrations, organised by the Sittingbourne Retail Association.

From 11am to 5pm tomorrow, the High Street will be filled with stalls, entertainment and classic cars.

There will be three areas for performances – the entrance to Central Avenue, The Forum and outside The George public house.

Town crier Richard Spooner and Chris Swain, AKA Steven the Mad Monk, will be entertaining the crowds and announcing various acts.

The line-up includes the Dead Horse morris dancers, Swift Gymnastics, Freemen of Blean re-enactment group, Key Street Band, singer Ashleigh, who will perform various music styles including songs from Disney animations such as Frozen, solo street artist Tori, and jazz musician Steve Harding.

In addition, there will be a real ale tent, market stalls, fairground rides and a tug-of-war contest.

All shops will be open as usual, many of which will be taking part in a themed window display competition.

At The Forum between 11am and 4pm there will be a Creepy Crawlie road show with live animals, a dragon-making workshop courtesy of Swale Arts Forum, and performances from Latvian dancers.

A face painter will also be on hand from 11am until 3pm to transform children into dragons and knights.

St Michael’s Church, which will be open between 11am and 3pm, will display entries to its annual art competition for children. Parents and members of the public will be asked to vote for the winners. Verger Clifford Styles will give guided tours of the High Street building at 11am and 3pm, and there will be organ recitals by choirmaster Ian Payne and organist Nigel Macarthur at noon and 2pm respectively.

There will also be pictures for young children to colour in, a treasure map and the opportunity to hide a dragon with loose change.

Light refreshments will be available throughout the day.

Co-ordinator Sara Seabridge said: “We’re really looking forward to the day. We’ve got more stalls than last year, and the fairgrounds rides will be great fun.

“Tomar Owl Sanctuary will be bringing some of their birds.

“Many local charities will have games and competitions at their stalls and Sittingbourne Greyhounds’ limo will be in attendance.

“The Scouts, Maritime Cadets, Girl Guides and Sea Cadets will all also be represented.”
