"Sophie loved flowers, but had expressed a wish for any tributes to be made as donations to either Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance or Crohn's & Colitis UK.”

Tributes also poured in from Tarvos Wealth Ltd in Canterbury where the teenager started an apprenticeship in last August.

"It is difficult to imagine what her parents must be going through, but of course all of our thoughts are with them at this very difficult time."

Mr Ludden said the teenager usually travelled to work with two other colleagues but they were absent on the day of the accident.

Sophie was also a student at Canterbury College during her apprenticeship where she was studying business administration.

Director of student support services for the college Lut Stewart said: “Staff and students are saddened to hear the news about Sophie.

"Sophie was a lovely person who had a very bright future ahead of her and we extend our deepest sympathies to her family and friends.

"She was just a wonderful girl with an incredible spirit, we are all devastated by the loss."

A Southeastern spokesman said: “Our thoughts are very much with Sophie’s family and friends following this tragic incident. We are assisting the British Transport Police with their investigation.”

Trains were stopped after the incident at around 8am on Monday and emergency crews were called.
