Sittingbourne manager Nick Davis was part of new Gills boss Justin Edinburgh's first promotion-winning team.

Davis won Edinburgh over to play a key role at centre-half as Fisher earned promotion to Conference South via the Ryman League Premier Division play-offs in 2006.

Nine years on, former Tottenham defender Edinburgh is out to lead Gillingham back to the Championship after leaving Newport.

Davis said: "He made me his player-of-the-year when we won promotion from the Ryman Premier.

"He came in for the last 25 games of the season and was going to drop me at first but I kept playing well and stayed in the team.

"I was the only player in the whole team who had a job, everyone else was full-time.

"He was good - methodical and very well organised.

"You knew he would go on as a manager. If you've got pedigree as a player, you're halfway there but fair play to him.

"He started at Billericay and worked his way up. He's done it the right way and did really well at Newport."
