A man has been seriously injured in the head after a hammer attack in a Margate street today.

Several police cars and an ambulance were called to Athelstan Road at around 10.40am.

A man was airlifted to Queen's Hospital, in Romford, with a serious head injury.

Kent Police said a 20-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident and is in custody.

An offer stood guard outside the house this afternoon as investigations continued.

A spokesman for South East Coast Ambulance Service confirmed staff attended the scene and treated someone there, but would not say more as it was a private address.
