Thanet council planning to sell off eight sites

Council chiefs in Thanet have unveiled eight sites which could be sold in the coming year.

It forms part of the authority’s asset disposal programme which aims to raise funds for the cash-strapped council through sale proceeds and cutting management costs.

Among the assets earmarked are Palm Bay coach park and the Quartedeck in Zion Place in Margate.

Two sites on New Haine Road, at Eurokent Business Park, have also been outlined, as well as a site at 2 Park Place, Margate, land at the eastern entrance to Northdown Park and Northdown Garages and Store.

A further 19 sites, including Broadstairs bandstand, the Victoria Parade kiosk and the Ice House in Ramsgate, are proposed for transfer to town and parish council responsibility.

Members of the cabinet have been recommended to proceed with the disposal and will vote at a meeting on Thursday.

In a report due to be discussed, Matthew Hill, head of asset management, said the disposals are required to enable the “continued investment in council assets”.

“The disposal of the assets listed in this report will not only generate capital receipts but will also reduce ongoing maintenance costs and reduce the risk of incurring future capital expenditure,” he said.

“In the short term, however, there will be a reduction in revenue in the amount of £4,345 per annum.”

He said the disposals programme is proposed to ensure the delivery of the council’s medium term financial strategy and capital programme, involving existing and new projects.

Last year, the council agreed to 22 sites, including land at North Foreland and Westgate Pavilion, to be disposed of, but dozens more will be looked at in the coming years.
