Following on from last weeks hunt for Ramsgate’s most famous faces it was Margate's turn to reveal who has played a part in the town’s history.

KING GEORGE IV

King of Great Britain and Ireland and of Hanover met his bride at the assembly rooms, now Margate Public Library, Cecil Street.

JOSEPH MALLORD WILLIAM TURNER

The English Romanticist landscape painter who’s regarded as the artist who elevated landscape painting to a level rivalling history painting, attended Coleman’s School on the corner of Love Lane and Hawley Street.

ERIC MORECAMBE

The English comedian who together with Ernie Wise formed the award-winning double act Morecambe and Wise held his wedding reception at The Bulls Head, 1 Market Square.

THE DUKE OF CUMBERLAND

Prince William Augustus was the third and youngest son of King George II and therefore King George III brother who lived at 13 Cecil Square.

GEORGE MORLAND

The English painter of animals and rustic scenes became extremely popular and was much imitated and forged and also lived just round the corner from Turner at this site on 8 Love Lane.

THE PRINCE FREDERICK AUGUSTUS

The second son and child of King George III Prince Frederick “The Grand Old Duke of York” lived here on the corner of Duke Street and The Parade at York Mansions.

HATTIE JACQUES and JOHN LE MESURIER

Comedy actress Hattie Jacques took to the stage, radio and screen and is best known as a regular of the Carry On films, and actor John Le Mesurier played Sergeant Arthur Wilson in Dad’s Army both lived at Albion Lodge, 25 Trinity Square in the 1960s.
