Man dies after A299 Thanet Way car and lorry crash

A man in his 50s has died in a crash between a lorry and a car along a major road.

Emergency services were called to the incident after a white DAF skip loader truck collided with a black Peugeot 3008 along the east-bound carriageway of the A299 Thanet Way, near St Nicholas-at-Wade, at 1.40pm yesterday.

The driver of the SUV, a man from south-east London in his 50s, was confirmed dead at the scene, as part of the route remained sealed off for about eight hours.

A police spokesman said: "Kent Police’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit is investigating the circumstances and officers are appealing for any witnesses to get in contact."

The A299 was shut in both directions between Herne Bay and St Nicholas-at-Wade immediately after the crash.

The London-bound carriageway was reopened shortly afterwards, but the eastbound lanes remained closed until about 9pm.

While the route was sealed off, tailbacks are understood to have been stretching back to Herne Common.

Detectives are also hoping to obtain dashcam footage that shows the truck or the car prior to and in the moments leading up to the incident.

They are urging anyone with information to call them on 01622 798538, quoting the reference number MM/DC/083/21.
