Arsonist puts lives at risk at Ramsgate tower block days after Grenfell inferno

Police have renewed an appeal for information following a series of suspicious fires at a block of flats in Ramsgate - the latest just days after the London inferno.

Firefighters have attended Trove Court in Newcastle Hill a number of times over the past three months due to fires inside a rubbish chute that they believe are being started deliberately.

The latest was at 12.19am on Monday - five days after the devastating fire at Grenfell Tower in London.

Officers had previously visited the scene with Kent Fire and Rescue Service and East Kent Housing, where they carried out door-to-door enquiries and provided safety advice to residents.

Inspector Lara Connor of Kent Police said: "While the cause of these fires remains unknown, the belief is that they are being started deliberately.

"It goes without saying that starting fires is incredibly dangerous and puts lives at risk. It also potentially diverts resources away from other more serious incidents.

"We want to see an end to these reports and I would encourage anyone with information to call the appeal line on 01843 222289. Alternatively call Kent Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.’

Residents who have safety concerns in the event of a fire can contact East Kent Housing on 01843 577262 or visit www.eastkenthousing.org.uk.
