Margate: Sewage flows onto beach from public toilets

Raw untreated sewage is not what beach-goers expect to be greeted by on a beautiful sunny day.

But visitors to Margate main sands have been left disgusted at the site of waste flowing out from the public toilets onto the sand.

One bay user says it has been this way for a few days - and the council says it is working urgently to resolve the problem which has come at the hottest time of the year.

One beach-goer said: "It is disgusting and what is more disturbing is that the council after the first call let it carry on for two more days.

"I got upset with them and hope they will deal with it.

"There was two boys making sands castles with that awful wet sand.

"I am hoping the sand will be removed and it doesn't happen again."

Thanet District Council says it is aware of the issue and the toilets have been closed.

A council spokesman said: "Our cleansing team has been to clear this as a matter of urgency.

"A contractor has been engaged and will be on site to undertake the necessary repairs as soon as possible.

"This has only affected a very small section of the beach but it is not something we take lightly and we are working to remedy the situation as quickly as we can."

Southern Water have been contacted for a comment.
