Baby seal stranded on Birchington beach helped by Kent firefighters

A baby seal had to be rescued from a Kent beach last night after it became stranded.

Firefighters were called to Birchington beach, Thanet, at around 9.15pm after the RSPCA discovered the young cub on the shore.

The crew from Margate were sent to Beresford Gap to help officials from the animal charity.

After the young pup was assessed the crew began to put it into a body bag and carry it back to RSPCA workers.

It is believed the seal pup, which was alive and well following its ordeal, had run into trouble after getting stranded on the beach as the tide went out.

The youngster was thought to be two-months-old and about 2ft in length.

It comes in the same week when another young seal cub decided to take a trip ashore to spend some time with fishermen at Dungeness.
