Punch drunk Jordan Line was spoiling for another fight when he staggered across a street brawl.

The 20-year-old drug addict had earlier been knocked unconscious and was looking for revenge in Ramsgate.

But he was so disorientated after taking drugs he mistook his own brother as the man who had attacked him.

And he was so out of his mind that he missed him with the blow, but struck a police officer who had earlier helped him.

Now Line, of Eastern Esplanade, Margate, has been jailed for a total of 19 months after admitting assault, possessing cannabis, being a sex offender and changing addresses without informing the authorities as well as twice skipping bail.

Prosecutor Andrew Forsyth told Canterbury Crown Court how PC Edward Rose was one of the officers called to deal with a brawl that began in a Ramsgate pub in April.

The drama was caught on CCTV and shown to the judge, who saw the officer helping Line's brother – when he was punched from behind.

Line was then seen to aim a karate-style kick at the officer before running away – only to be caught seconds later.

Mr Forsyth said the officer's cheekbone was damaged and required surgical gluing and he suffered blurred vision from a black eye.

Line ran away, but was stooped with the help of passer-by Terence Wood who was commended by the judge.

The prosecutor said that after his arrest, Line described himself as an "arse" and apologises to the police officer.

When he was searched, officers discovered him carrying a quantity of cannabis in his pockets.

Kerry Waite, defending, said: "The defendant had been unconscious after the earlier attack and was to an extent disorientated.

"When he came across the scene he believed they were his assailants and so he ran to the group and struck the officer."

Judge Adele Williams told him: "There was fighting taking place in the street in Ramsgate and police officers attended.

"You had been drinking and had taken ecstasy and you later described yourself as paranoid. There is no doubt that your victim, PC Rose, had been trying to help you and your brother. You have a problem with those who exercise authority.

"You dealt him a blow with such force his cheek was lacerated. Make no mistake about it, those who assault police officers who are doing no more than their duty, do so at their peril."
