Ukip investigates Thanet councillor Bertie Braidwood over 'offensive' Instagram posting

A newly-elected Ukip councillor in Thanet is being investigated over posting 'potentially offensive material' on his social media accounts.

Bertie Braidwood, a member of Ukip-controlled Thanet District Council, posted a picture of gollies on his Instagram account, the BBC report says.

Other posts seen by KentOnline appear to back both the BNP and English Defence League.

Cllr Braidwood, who represents the Westgate-on-Sea ward, is vice-chair of the council's Licensing Board and also serves on the Standards Committee.

One of the pictures believed to be under investigation was posted more than three years ago on Instagram with a caption stating 'My golly collection.'

Cllr Braidwood has also posted comments on Facebook stating: "English Defence League, BNP ... your time has come."

Thanet is the first council in the UK to be run by Ukip following this month's election, although party leader Nigel Farage failed in his attempt to win the Thanet South Parliamentary seat.

Last week council leader Chris Wells said his ambition was for the authority to avoid controversy and be the 'most boring' in the country.

He said he did not wish to comment on Cllr Braidwood's posts.

KentOnline has asked Cllr Braidwood for a comment.
