Bomb alert in Tonbridge Road, Hildenborough

Homes were evacuated tonight because of a suspected unexploded bomb.

Police cordoned off part of Hildenborough after a wartime device was unearthed by workmen.

Homes in Tonbridge Road near Coldharbour Lane were affected.

A police spokesman said: "Officers were called at 3.22pm to a report of what was believed to be an unexploded wartime device being found in Tonbridge Road, Hildenborough.

"A cordon has been established and nearby residents have been evacuated as a precaution.

"Explosive Ordnance Device experts from the Ministry of the Defence have been called to attend."

By 10pm the the emergency was over.

A police spokesman said: "The EOD assessed the item and it was not deemed an explosive. They have taken the item away."
