It is understood the mystery item was discovered after engineers from the Environment Agency reduced the water level so the bed of the river could be cleared of rubbish during routine maintenance.

George Peryer took photos of the river at lunch time today and reported that water levels were "pretty low" on social media.

Another added: "I have been speaking to the Environment Agency about this. This is deliberate and while it is low they will be removing all the trolleys, litter and other debris which is on the river bank and river bed. It is done every spring and is known as winter shoaling."

Police were called at 3.30pm today following a report of a suspected wartime munition in the water.

A police spokesman said: "Officers attended the location near to Avebury Avenue to assist with a cordon whilst the Ministry of Defence’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal team assessed the object and confirmed it was not an explosive and posed no risk to public safety."
